CD "Ellington and more Johannes Landgren - Håkan Lewin live in Russia"

Live recording from Chelyabinsk, Russia. The CD is distributed by "Imogena", a Swedish record company, and it contains music by a.o. Duke Ellington, Thad Jones Håkan Lewin and traditional afro-american spirituals in new arrangements.

"The organist Johannes Landgren and the alto saxophone player Håkan Lewin have specialized in performing Duke Ellington's sacred music and African American spirituals. Their new album, published by Imogena, is no exception. They offer a wonderful experience where Lewin's transcendent alto saxophone is supported and accompanied by the mighty pipe organ. Sometimes it feels as though the gates of Heaven are wide open..." (Sundsvalls tidning)

"I cannot understand Johannes Landgren. He accomplishes everything, he does it well, very well... A door which suddenly and unexpectedly opens the gates to new worlds..." (KMT)

SACD "Freedom - The Vision" [2003]

Afroa American music for pipe organ, saxophone and Hammond organ. In the music, which spans over feelings of hope and joy as well as despair and frustration, Johannes Landgren, Håkan Lewin och Kjeld Lauritsen found the common values of the concept "Freedom - the vision".
- We discussed the situation in the world and found that we wanted to formulate something important, they say. This concert is a kind of protest against the society, which we are forming today. The music is based upon the heritage of so calle negro spirituals, in new arrangements by Håkan Lewin, and with the unique combination of alto saxophone, pipe organ and hammond organ.

CD "In my solitude" [1999]

Deep emotions fills the room when the saxophone player Håkan Lewin and the organist Johannes Landgren interpret Duke Ellington’s timeless music.

The music is primarily derived from Duke Ellington’s three "Sacred Concerts" and forms what the duo calls the concert "In my solitude". Originally the music is composed for the churches, and made use of the Big band as well as choirs, dancers, soloists and a narrator.

The title reflects the concept of freedom and the music contains sentiments of liberation, pain and joy, says Håkan Lewin. The saxophone acts in this combination as the soloist while the organ is the replacement of the Big band as well as the rhythm section, making use of both walking bass and lyrical soundscape.

Concert "Music against violence" (Lewin/Landgren/Spang-Hanssen/Björänge)

During the year 2004 the Göteborg duo Håkan Lewin och Johannes Landgren (alto saxophone/pipe organ or digital organ) has had tremendous success with concerts in USA, Scandinavia, Croatia, Russia, Portugal etc. Through the music by Duke Ellington, expressing the strong beliefs in freedom and equal rights, the message of non violence is formulated in an emotional perfomance. The concert also includes music by other composers from the jazz tradition as well as music inspired by folk music and original compositions by Håkan Lewin.

A few quotations about the message:

Albert Einstein: "The world is dangerous not because of those who do harm, but because of those who look at it without doing anything."

Kofi Annan: "The greatest sin is being passive."

Duke Ellington: "We made our point, and I don't think there's been any doubt about how we felt concerning prejudice. But still the best way for me to be effective is through music."

"Now it's our turn to continue!"

Håkan Lewin, Johannes Landgren, Ulrik Spang-Hanssen, Jon-Erik Björänge

This concert is available as a duo, trio or quartet-concept with Håkan Lewin (alto saxophone), Johannes Landgren (pipe/digital organ), Ulrik Spang-Hanssen (pipe/digita organ, Hammond organ/piano) and Jon-Erik Björänge (drums/percussion).

Through a digital organ this concert can be played in many different concert venues – from the jazz stage to museums or concert halls.

Concert "Freedom - The Vision" (Lewin/Landgren/Lauritsen)

This concert is played as a trio concert for saxophone/pipe organ and Hammond organ – with the possible replacement of the pipe organ with a digital organ)

Only a few days after Sep 11, 2001, Johannes Landgren and Håkan Lewin went to New York to perform "Freedom - the vision".

This concert is formed as a protest against our cruel and injustice society. The afro american music was a natural choice, since it was composed under oppression and was sung or performed to be able to cope with the situation. The concert has been performed all over the world.

Concert "In My Solitude" (Lewin/Landgren)

This concert is based upon music from Duke Ellington’s ”Sacred Concerts”. Alice Babs had her great international break through with this music as a soloist to Duke Ellington’s orchestra. The duo Lewin/Landgren has performed this concert hundreds of times, both in Sweden and abroad. The arrangements are written by Ulf Wesslén. The music gives room for lyrical ballads, exciting sounds and, as one paper wrote ”it's simply extraordinary beutiful”.
